As we celebrate Pride Month, I’ve been reflecting on what it truly means to feel at home. Not just within yourself, but in your physical space. For many, homeownership for LGBTQ+ community represents far more than a milestone or investment. It’s a symbol of safety, stability, and self-determination. That’s why I wrote this piece. Not just to talk about mortgages, but to talk about why this work matters, especially now.
There’s something deeply personal about owning a home. And for LGBTQ+ individuals, it’s more than an investment: it’s about safety. It’s about autonomy. It’s about finally having space to be yourself, without compromise or permission.
The idea of home carries weight for all of us, but when you’ve spent years navigating spaces that weren’t built for you, or worse, made you feel like you didn’t belong. Owning something of your own can be transformative.
It’s also something many people in our community are told, sometimes directly and often subtly, is not for us.
I started Pride Lending because I got tired of watching Queer borrowers treated like outliers. I got tired of hearing clients say, “we didn’t know we could qualify,” or “we thought we had to hide who we were,” or “we just assumed no one would understand.”
No one should have to minimize themselves to get a mortgage.
What Makes Homeownership So Important for the LGBTQ+ Community?
Safety. Stability. Generational wealth. Those are obvious answers and they’re all true. But there’s also something quieter I hear all the time from LGBTQ+ buyers: “I just want to feel settled. Like I belong somewhere.”
That feeling of belonging shouldn’t be reserved for someone else’s idea of normal. And it shouldn’t require a perfect credit score, a six-figure income, or a straight-passing profile to access.
Here’s What We’re Doing to Increase LGBTQ+ Homeownership
At Pride Lending, we don’t just write loans, we advocate. And here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Listen before we assume. Your story, your goals, your challenges all shape how we approach your file.
- Partner only with inclusive lenders. If a lender or program isn’t LGBTQ+–affirming, we don’t recommend it.
- Focus on first-time buyers. Because the system is confusing enough when you’ve been through it before.
- Give back. A portion of every loan we close goes directly to nonprofits serving local LGBTQ+ communities, because equity isn’t just about access, it’s about reinvestment.
What I Want LGBTQ+ Homebuyers to Know
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
You don’t have to have it all together before you reach out.
You don’t have to know the “right questions” to ask.
You just have to want a home and be willing to let someone help you find your way there.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign that it’s possible, this may be it.
And if you’ve been burned before by this process or this industry, I want you to know that I see you. I’ve been you. And you deserve to be a homeowner.
If and when you’re ready, I’d be honored to walk with you.
I am at your service,
Andrew Dort
